Those Yankee School Teachers Sure Talked Funny

A relative on my spouse's aspect, recently realized that we have been shifting to Atlanta, Georgia, within the close to future.

She is a candy lady, and one of many things I treasure about being married to my Arizona spouse is the nice household of Arizona Sicilians I inherited within the process. Nevertheless, sure family members, like the expensive lady I am speaking about, have never traveled much to the east of Arizona.

Just a few days after she realized of our choice, she despatched my spouse an email during which she appeared to point that she was under the impression that people have been poor and not very well educated within the South.

I had thought that we had put that concept out to pasture (that's what we do with things within the South), back within the days of the Yankee school teachers.

You see, I grew up in Pensacola, Florida, attending Catholic colleges from first grade through my commencement from Pensacola Catholic Excessive in 1963. Along the way in which, in addition to the bevy of nuns who tried, with various degrees of success, to drum knowledge into my thick skull, there was a small cadre of earnest young ladies from up North who stuffed in when enough nuns weren't available.

Now, they have been candy young ladies from unique locations akin to New Jersey and Massachusetts, they usually did an excellent job. Nevertheless, they certain talked funny!

It seems they had some unusual ideas, too.

My mother taught third grade at St. Thomas More parish in Warrington for thirty years and plenty of of these young ladies wound up there. Mother bought to know lots of them very well. Sooner or later, certainly one of these young lecturers confided a secret to her in regards to the recruiting process.

When the recruiters have been looking out up above the Mason-Dixon line for suitable young ladies to show "down South", they painted an image of poverty and destitution. In spite of everything, we HAD lost the warfare, and, at the very least to hear them inform it, had never recovered.

Many of the young instructing school graduates already had some kind of psychological image of life down South, and the recruiters' descriptions simply served to accent what they thought they already knew from the historical past they had realized up North.

My mother's young pal confided that she had been genuinely shocked to study that she could really take an airplane into a real airport in Pensacola, after changing planes in Atlanta, of course! She had arrived expecting to live in a hovel, live on corn pone, and share an outdoor privy. She was quite amazed that, apart from the accent, and the slower tempo, and the truth that the whole lot was fried, and the southern hospitality, residing in Pensacola was just about like residing in no matter Northern state they had left behind!

Of all the minor differences, nevertheless, the accent was in all probability the most major impediment the young Yankee ladies needed to surmount. In spite of everything, they didn't know learn how to speak English very well.

I keep in mind at some point at Catholic Excessive, in Algebra class, when a beautiful young lady from New Jersey introduced herself as our new teacher.

Johnny, certainly one of our classmates, a died-in-the-wool down-dwelling southern boy, stood up and asked a query about homework, if I keep in mind correctly.

The young lady, stared at him for a second, and then cheerfully and politely asked him to repeat his query, which he cheerfully and politely did.

Even at that tender age, the look that started to appear on her face tipped me to what was going through her mind.

The cheerful smile turned a bit more brittle and the eyes just a little wider, form of like a frightened animal, as she faced certainly one of her first actual challenges as a trainer within the South.

Again, and with a slight nervousness in her voice, she asked Johnny to repeat his question.

His face started to redden, and this time, there was little politeness and even much less cheerfulness in his voice.

Now, there was no mistaking the bewilderment and consternation on the trainer's face. Desperately, she searched the faces of the other college students, some of whom have been starting to snicker and trade figuring out glances, and then asked, with a confused smile, "Is he talking English?"

Johnny was now able to restart the Warfare Between the States, but Tommy, his good pal, whose accent was virtually as thick as Johnny's, stood up, grabbed him by the shoulders, and stated plainly enough for the trainer to know, "Naw, Ma'am! He's jist tryin' to ask about homework. You jist ain't understandin' the way in which we discuss down right here yet."

Now, till that moment, I had never actually realized that my friends and I talked with a Southern accent! We had been bathed in its sounds and syllables since birth. There were minor differences amongst us, but for all my life that gentle Southern drawl had been to me, at the very least, the way in which folks talked.

Everyone else talked funny!

Even my aunts, uncles, and cousins in Atlanta talked completely different, but we, the lucky few who lived along the Gulf Coast spoke correct English.

Ultimately, the young trainer, and plenty of others like her, realized to grasp our language, and even perhaps our lives. Possibly they even returned up North and took back some true information in regards to the South. Nevertheless, my story happened within the 1960's and my spouse's relative made her comments in 2009. I guess not everyone bought the word...with or with out a Southern drawl.
